START YOUR ROAD TO RECOVERY

At Sports Massage Works we specialise in targeting your pain and helping you to get some normality back to your everyday activities.

sports massage for injuries

Sports Massage Works are able to help improve a range of injuries and afflictions brought on while exercising or playing sports like Running, Football, Rugby, Tennis, Netball, Rowing, Bapminton, Golf, and Hockey. Sports massage is different in that it targets the pain and looks at the problem to help prevent future injuries.

This type of massage best serves athletes, runners (especially good for marathon runners), those in active jobs (plumber, electriction, builder).  It can also work very well for those who sit at their desk all day, or drives a lot, or carries / lfits heavy equipment. In conjunction with stretching, using a foam roller, it is used to help prevent injuries, to prepare the body for athletic activity (pre and post massages) and maintain it in optimal condition. It is a great way to help athletes recover from workouts and injuries, and also assists with muscle maintenance. We assist with leg and foot massage, arm massage, back, neck and shoulder massage as well as hip, wrist and ankle mobilisation (not manipulation).  For a less intense treatment, check out our deep/soft tissue therapies below.

deep tissue massage for your aches

Sports Massage Works also does deep tissue massage to ease pain, tension and aches across the body. It usually targets the whole body (leg and foot massage, back, neck, shoulder massage) as opposed to a specific area. The therapist will provide a therapeutic or slightly deeper massage technique which is deeper, slower and more deliberate in technique.

Our treatments are great if you are an athlete dealing with sore muscles as a result of a hard workout, and helps to avoid future injuries as well as improve current ones. It is also ideal if you are looking for a relaxing yet deep leg and foot massage, or back, neck and shoulders massage.  Our course of massage treatments offers a range of benefits for the body including relief from pain and stiffness across different areas. Massages have also been shown to release endorphins, which is your body's own pain-relief chemical.

MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE (MLD) FOR POST SURGERY LYMPH MOVEMENT

What is lymph?

Lymph is the fluid that flows through the lymphatic system, a system composed of lymph vessels and intervening lymph nodes whose function, like the venous system, is to return fluid from the tissues to the central circulation.

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?

MLD is a powerful, relaxing but extremely light technique that is used to move lymph manually in order to reduce oedema and fibrosis as a result from injury or surgery like liposuction, tummy tuck, knee/hip replacements.  The aim is to relieve pain and tension, reduce swelling/oedema by moving lymph manually and is the complete opposite to sports or deep tissue massage where pressure is applied.

This technique is so light that you can sometimes fall asleep during treatment and only some clients are likely to "feel" the lymph move. This does not mean it's not working, it just means some clients feel it more than others.  MLD facilitates removal of metabolic wastes, bacteria, toxins and excess water.  It's good to help with the following:

  • oedema
  • skin disorders
  • headaches
  • sinus congestion
  • sprains/aches
  • stress
  • digestive disorders
  • surgery/scar tissue

Important note:  it is advisable that women do not undergo MLD whilst menstruating. Another note:  if you have taken medication like antibiotics and are new to taking medication, then it is also advised to wait a day after the final course of medication is completed before having treatment.

Advice when booking:  if you don't have regular massages then half an hour is advised to begin with as there are side affects to this treatment.

MLD Aftercare Advice

Contraindications to MLD include:  (this means we  cannot treat you)

  • acute infectious diseases/fever
  • active cancer patients or an undiagnosed lump
  • malignant melanomas
  • serious circulatory problems
  • major heart problems

GP Consent required for the following conditions:

  • diabetes
  • removal of spleen
  • epilepsy
  • breast implants
  • organ transplants
  • joint replacements

Each individual responds differently to MLD treatment, therefore each session is tailored to suit the individual accordingly.  For example, if you are new to having MLD treatment it may be best to book half an hour to start off with and progress from there as recovery is monitored.

PREGNANCY MASSAGE to relax mum

Pregnancy Massage is a lovely and light, relaxing technique, using long strokes which help circulation and designed to make you feel comfortable and relaxed. You need to be 13-weeks or more before a Pregnancy Massage can take place.

With pregnancy massage you are treated on your side to avoid putting pressure on the abdomen and will be different from the usual deep tissue or sports massage as the techniques will slightly differ and pressure won't be as hard.  This is to protect you and the baby but you still leave feeling much better than when you walked in!

DRY CUPPING to assist STRETCHING MUSCLE & FASCIA

What is Dry Cupping?

Is a modern technique involving a suction device (using glass/plastic cups) to remove air from the cups where a vacuum force pulls your skin up into the cup. We do this by finding the tight muscle areas and place the cups over the localised area to create a vacuum - this lifts the soft tissue and creates an "upward" stretch within the muscle group and fascia. The cups can be used usually between five to 10 minutes, either "at rest" or by moving them.

Cupping increases blood circulation at the point of the injury, helping to reduce tension and spasms, and promotes cell repair which is why it is good to apply when localising a specific area of pain. People who use cupping say that it tends to reduce pain and disability, increasing range of motion.

Note:  Cupping can leave temporary marks on the skin which fades within a few days to a week.
